My last visit to Memphis brought up all sorts of memories—all good, all real, even the ones that hurt. It’s part this time of year (it was in the 40s in Mississippi this morning!), part the place (suffused with ghosts), and partly a visit to this little house:
Fmr. home of Jeff Buckley, Memphis, Tennessee, Polaroid 600 (all photos October 2021)
This of course has kicked off a wonderful exploration and revisiting of his music—luminous, dramatic, gentle, roaring, frustratingly incomplete, gleamingly finished, messy, serious, knowing. Freshly showered but with glitter around the eye.
Let’s agree “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over” feels exactly right—yes the lyrics are overwrought, but it’s the feeling that matters—and one line in particular—“Where are you tonight?” What else is there to say? “You should’ve come over . . . its not too late.” Do you remember feeling like that? I almost do; it’s Fall, so I want to.

Over at Ryan & Katie’s, Polaroid 600
I love this photograph and knew it was going to rule the minute I saw the (amazing) puzzle in media res, plus their traditional dining room bowl of pool balls for a splash of color. Whenever I’m around Katie & Ryan I make better art, I think. I want to make art around them, like playing music with old friends. Plus we explore and see all sorts of great places. Some of my favorite photos of all time I’ve taken while standing next to them, in a place they took me.

Just a small remark that I got to see Waxahatchee, and it was beyond what I ever hoped it could be. One of my favorite musical experiences of all time, with roses wrapped around. I cannot wait to see what art she makes next.
